If your shop in Workington is on a parade or in a conservation area, the look of the shutter matters as much as the security, so we talk through planning-friendly options such as perforated laths or a box behind the fascia.
Rules that apply in Workington
Planning in Workington follows the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and the permitted development rules in England. Shopfront shutters usually need planning permission; for houses it depends on the property, and listed buildings need listed building consent from the council, with Historic England involved for higher-grade buildings.
Electrical work for powered shutters is carried out to BS 7671, with notifiable work in homes (under Part P) self-certified by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control.
Fire shutters in workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats, are maintained under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, where the responsible person is responsible for keeping fire safety measures in working order. Fire shutters that form part of building work also need approval from building control (council or a registered building control approver).
