Manual roller shutters

Push-up, crank and chain-operated shutters for openings where power is not wanted or needed. Surveyed, made to measure and fitted across the UK.

A manual roller shutter is raised and lowered by hand rather than by a motor: small shutters are spring-balanced and simply pushed up, mid-sized ones are wound with a crank handle, and large doors use a chain and gearbox. They are simple, cheap to run and work in a power cut.

What are manual roller shutters?

Manual shutters suit lock-ups, outbuildings, small shopfronts, counters and any opening without a power supply. With nothing electrical to fail, they are reliable, but they need more effort and they take longer to open each day.

Push-up shutters rely on springs in the barrel that counterbalance the curtain; when springs weaken the shutter becomes heavy, which is a repair rather than a replacement.

Most manual shutters can be converted to electric later if your needs change.

Which options can you choose?

  • Push-upSpring-balanced, for smaller openings up to around 2,500 mm wide.
  • CrankGearbox and removable crank handle for mid-sized openings.
  • ChainEndless chain and gearbox for large doors.

Questions about manual roller shutters

Why is my push-up shutter heavy?

The springs that balance the curtain lose tension over time. Re-tensioning or replacing them usually fixes it.

Can a manual shutter be motorised later?

In most cases yes, by fitting a motor inside the barrel or a gear motor on the side.

Are manual shutters cheaper?

Yes, to buy and to run, but they cost staff time every day on busy premises.
