What are door roller shutters?
Back doors and side doors that open onto alleys, passages or rear gardens are the usual reason people ask. A shutter adds a second line of protection in front of the door itself, keeps weather off a timber door, and lets you leave the house for a holiday knowing the doorway is closed off.
The important design question is how you get in and out when the shutter is down. If it is the only way out of the house, it must open from inside without a key in an emergency, so we plan the control position, a manual override and, where useful, a battery backup.
Door shutters are normally made in heavier extruded or double-wall aluminium laths than window shutters, with a solid bottom rail and anti-lift locking so the curtain cannot be raised from outside.
Which options can you choose?
- LathsDouble-wall foam-filled aluminium for most doors; extruded aluminium where the door is in a hidden spot.
- ControlInside switch, remote, outside key switch or keypad; app control through a smart hub.
- LockingAutomatic anti-lift locking straps in the top laths, plus a bottom-rail lock on manual doors.
- FitFace-fixed over the frame, or within a porch or recess.

What should you check before ordering?
- Getting out safely: A shutter over an exit door must open from inside quickly and without a key. We set the switch inside the door and add a manual override.
- Planning: Front-door shutters change how the house looks from the street, so check with your council first, especially in a conservation area or on a listed building.
- Electrics (England, Wales): Wired to BS 7671. Notifiable work in homes in England and Wales, such as a new circuit, is self-certified by a competent person scheme electrician or notified to building control.
- Electrics (Scotland, Northern Ireland): Wired to BS 7671 by a qualified electrician.

Questions about door roller shutters
Can I get out if the door shutter is down?
Yes. The control is inside, and we fit a manual override so the shutter can be raised by hand if the power is off. We will not fit a shutter over your only exit that needs a key from inside.
Are door shutters secure?
They add a strong physical layer in front of the door, especially with anti-lift locking. If you need a tested security rating, ask for a shutter certified to LPS 1175 or STS 202; the rating belongs to that tested product. PAS 24 applies to the door or window behind the shutter, not to the shutter itself.
How much does a door roller shutter cost?
A single door is usually £795–£1,195 including VAT, electric, supplied and fitted. Wider openings and doors with side lights cost more.
Can it be opened from outside?
With a key switch, keypad or remote, yes. Without one, it can only be opened from inside, which suits back doors.
Will it fit round my door handle?
The shutter runs in front of the door frame, so handles, letterboxes and door canopies are measured at survey and the guides are set out to clear them.
