What are patio & bifold door roller shutters?
Wide openings need the right lath and motor. Spans up to about 3,000 mm can usually be covered by one curtain; beyond that we either use a stronger extruded profile or split the opening into two shutters on a shared centre guide, which also lets you open half.
On extensions the neatest result comes from planning the shutter with the build, so the headbox sits inside the roof edge or behind a fascia and only the guides are visible. On existing houses the headbox sits under the lintel or soffit and is colour-matched to the frames.
Bifold and sliding doors stay fully usable: the shutter runs outside the doors, so you raise it and open the doors as normal.
Which options can you choose?

What should you check before ordering?
- Escape route: If the patio doors are a way out of the house, the shutter needs an inside control and a manual override.
- Planning: Rear shutters are less visible, but listed buildings and conservation areas can still need consent.
- Electrics (England, Wales): Wired to BS 7671. Notifiable work in homes in England and Wales, such as a new circuit, is self-certified by a competent person scheme electrician or notified to building control.
- Electrics (Scotland, Northern Ireland): Wired to BS 7671 by a qualified electrician.

Questions about patio & bifold door roller shutters
Can you fit a shutter over bifold doors?
Yes. The shutter runs outside the folding doors in its own guides, so it does not interfere with them. Very wide bifolds are often split into two shutters on a centre post.
How wide can one patio shutter be?
Around 3,000 mm in a standard foam-filled lath, and wider with stronger extruded profiles. We confirm the maximum for your opening at survey.
Will a shutter keep my extension cooler?
Yes, an external shutter stops sun reaching the glass, which is far more effective at reducing heat than an internal blind.
How much do patio door shutters cost?
Most patio and French doors are £1,195–£1,895 including VAT, electric, supplied and fitted. Wide bifolds cost more; you get a fixed price after survey.
Can the headbox be hidden?
On new extensions it can be built into the roof edge or behind a fascia. On existing houses it is fitted neatly under the lintel and colour-matched.
