What are solar roller shutters?
The panel only needs daylight, not direct sun, to keep the battery topped up for normal daily use. North-facing windows and openings shaded by trees or overhangs are assessed at survey, and the panel can be mounted remotely on a short lead if the headbox is in shade.
Control is by radio remote or wall-mounted wireless switch, and solar shutters can join the same timers and smart hubs as mains shutters.
Solar is a good fit for holiday homes, outbuildings, garden rooms and rented properties where you do not want electrical work inside.

Do solar shutters work in winter?
Yes. The panel charges in daylight, not just sunshine, and a full battery runs the shutter for many cycles. Very shaded spots are assessed at survey.
How long does the battery last?
Batteries are a replaceable part and typically last several years in normal use. Replacement does not mean replacing the shutter.
Are solar shutters more expensive?
The shutter costs more than a mains version, but you save on electrical work, which often makes the total similar.
Can solar shutters be put on a timer?
Yes, with a compatible wireless timer or smart hub.
