Roller shutter motor replacement

Failed or tired motors replaced and limits reset, without replacing the whole shutter. Carried out across the UK on most makes of shutter.

Roller shutter motor replacement means removing a failed or worn motor and fitting a new one matched to the curtain's weight and barrel, then setting the open and closed limits and testing the safety devices. In most cases the curtain, box and guides stay as they are.

What is roller shutter motor replacement?

Signs of a failing motor include a shutter that hums but does not move, stops part way, runs slowly, overheats and cuts out, or loses its limit settings. Some of these are control faults rather than motor faults, so we test before replacing anything.

Domestic shutters use tubular motors inside the barrel; shop shutters often use a tube motor or an external drive; industrial doors use a side-mounted gear motor. We match the torque and the barrel size and, where possible, the existing controls.

Replacement is also a good moment to add remotes, timers or smart control.

What does the work cover?

  • DomesticTubular motors for window, door and garage shutters.
  • ShopTube motors or external drives with key switch.
  • IndustrialDirect-drive gear motors with emergency hand operation.

What should you check first?

  • Electrical work: Motors are wired to BS 7671; any change to the supply is done by a qualified electrician.

How does the process work?

  1. Send photos and details

Tell us what the shutter is doing, roughly how big it is and what make it is, with photos of the shutter, box and any labels.

  2. Visit and diagnosis

An engineer checks the shutter, controls and safety devices, finds the cause and explains the options.

  3. Cost agreed first

The visit cost is agreed when you book, and any parts or extra work are priced and approved by you before we do them.

  4. Fixed, tested, reported

We complete the work, test the shutter and leave a short written record of what was found and done.

Questions about roller shutter motor replacement

How do I know if my shutter motor has failed?

If the shutter hums but does not move, stops part way, or does nothing when the power and switch are fine, the motor or its limits are the likely cause. We test before replacing.

Can I replace the motor without replacing the shutter?

Yes, in most cases. The motor slides out of the barrel or unbolts from the side.

How much does a new shutter motor cost?

A domestic tubular motor is usually £295–£595 including VAT fitted (£245–£495 plus VAT); commercial and industrial motors cost more depending on size and duty.
