What are electric roller shutters?
Power usually comes from a nearby socket circuit or a new spur, with a switch beside each window and, if you like, a remote for the whole house. Radio motors pair with hand-held remotes and wall switches without extra wiring between them, which keeps disruption low in finished rooms.
Timers and smart hubs are where electric shutters earn their keep: shutters can close at dusk while you are away, open in the morning, or lower automatically on hot afternoons on the sunny side of the house.
Modern motors have obstacle detection and soft stops, so the curtain stops if it meets an obstruction and the laths are not jammed into the bottom of the guides.

Questions about electric roller shutters
Do electric shutters need a new circuit?
Not always. Many can be fed from an existing circuit through a fused spur; larger groups may need a new circuit. We check at survey and the electrical work is done to BS 7671.
Can I control shutters from my phone?
Yes, with a compatible smart hub. You can open and close shutters from an app, set timers and scenes, and use voice assistants.
How long do shutter motors last?
A good tubular motor commonly lasts many years in domestic use. If one fails it can be replaced without replacing the whole shutter.
Are electric shutters noisy?
Tubular motors are quiet; most of the sound you hear is the laths rolling, which is a soft whirr.
Can my manual shutters be made electric?
Usually yes. A motor can be fitted inside the existing barrel, as long as the shutter is in reasonable condition.
