What are shop roller shutters?
The headbox of a shopfront shutter can sit behind the fascia so only the guides show, or on the face of the building where there is no room behind. Many councils prefer perforated or internal grilles on shopping streets, so we talk through the look as well as the security.
The usual specification is electric operation with a key switch or remote, a tube motor inside the barrel and a manual override for power cuts. Older manual push-up and crank shutters can usually be converted.
We price the shutter, the fixing details and any making-good together, so you know the full cost before ordering.

What should you check before ordering?
- Planning: A new shutter on a shopfront usually needs planning permission, because it changes how the building looks; councils often prefer perforated shutters or internal grilles, and some areas have shopfront design guides. Listed buildings also need listed building consent.
- Fire exits: A shutter must not obstruct a fire exit while the premises are occupied. We discuss operating procedures and any interlocks with you.
- Powered shutters: Powered shutters are set up so their safety devices work, and should be maintained. Workplace rules expect powered doors to be safe in use.

Questions about shop roller shutters
Do I need planning permission for a shop shutter?
Usually yes. A new external shutter on a shopfront changes how the building looks, so most councils expect an application, and some have shopfront design guides that prefer perforated shutters or internal grilles. We can supply drawings and product details.
How much does a shop shutter cost?
A typical single shopfront is £1,495–£2,795 plus VAT for an electric shutter, supplied and fitted. Manual shutters and smaller frontages cost less; wide frontages and premium finishes cost more.
Should I choose solid or perforated?
Solid gives the most privacy and weather protection. Perforated lets light out and allows window shopping out of hours, which many councils and landlords prefer.
Can you replace just the curtain?
Often, yes. If the box, barrel and guides are sound, a new curtain is cheaper than a complete shutter.
How long does installation take?
Most single shopfront shutters are fitted in a day once made.
