Steel roller shutters

Galvanised or powder-coated steel shutters for strength, large spans and heavy use. Surveyed, made to measure and fitted across the UK.

A steel roller shutter is made from roll-formed galvanised steel laths, sometimes powder-coated, and is the strongest common shutter material for its cost. It handles wide spans and heavy daily use, and is the usual choice for industrial units, lock-ups, depots and exposed shopfronts.

What are steel roller shutters?

Steel laths are heavier than aluminium, so they suit larger openings and buildings where strength and impact resistance matter more than weight. The trade-off is a bigger motor and box, and steel needs a good finish to resist corrosion near the coast.

Galvanised steel is the practical standard; powder-coating adds colour and an extra protective layer, which is worth it on visible elevations and in marine environments.

Steel curtains can be solid, insulated, perforated or punched.

Which options can you choose?

  • FinishGalvanised, or galvanised and powder-coated in RAL colours.

Questions about steel roller shutters

Is steel or aluminium better?

Steel is stronger for the money and suits big openings; aluminium is lighter, corrosion-resistant and neater, and suits homes, shops and coastal sites.

Will a steel shutter rust?

Galvanising protects the steel, and powder-coating adds another layer. Scratches and coastal air speed up corrosion, so regular cleaning helps.

Can steel shutters be painted?

They are best powder-coated in the factory; site painting rarely lasts on a moving curtain.
