Perforated roller shutters

Shutters punched with small holes so window displays stay visible and lit after closing. Surveyed, made to measure and fitted across the UK.

A perforated roller shutter has laths punched with rows of small holes, typically a few millimetres across. Closed, it still secures the opening, but light shows through and people can see the display behind it, which keeps a street feeling open and safe after hours.

What are perforated roller shutters?

Perforated shutters are a common compromise between security and appearance on shopping streets. Many councils and landlords prefer them to solid shutters, and retailers like that lit windows keep advertising after closing.

For more visibility there are punched or vision laths with larger slots, and roller grilles with an open tube-and-link pattern. Each step up in visibility is a step down in privacy and weather protection.

Perforated laths are available in galvanised or powder-coated steel and in aluminium, with electric or manual operation.

Which options can you choose?

  • PatternMicro-perforated, standard perforated or punched vision slots.
  • MaterialGalvanised steel, powder-coated steel or aluminium.
  • MixSolid laths at the bottom for kick resistance, perforated above.

What should you check before ordering?

  • Planning: A perforated shutter is often the type councils will accept on a shopfront, but an application is usually still needed.
  • Weather: Perforations let some wind and rain through, so think about the glazing behind and draughts in exposed spots.

Questions about perforated roller shutters

Are perforated shutters less secure?

They are slightly lighter than solid shutters of the same gauge, but still form a strong physical barrier. Solid bottom laths add kick resistance.

Why do councils prefer perforated shutters?

They keep shopping streets looking lit and active after hours rather than lined with blank steel, which many shopfront design guides encourage.

Can I see into the shop through a perforated shutter?

Yes, especially when the shop is lit. Punched vision laths give a clearer view.
