Window shutters are usually chosen for security when a house is empty, for blackout in bedrooms or for keeping summer heat off the glass, and the survey in South Croydon starts with which of those matters most to you.
For shops in South Croydon, the shutter is specified around how often it runs, how the frontage looks and what your landlord or council expects.
Rules that apply in South Croydon
Planning in South Croydon follows the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and the permitted development rules in England. Shopfront shutters usually need planning permission; for houses it depends on the property, and listed buildings need listed building consent from the council, with Historic England involved for higher-grade buildings.
Electrical work for powered shutters is carried out to BS 7671, with notifiable work in homes (under Part P) self-certified by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control.
Fire shutters in workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats, are maintained under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, where the responsible person is responsible for keeping fire safety measures in working order. Fire shutters that form part of building work also need approval from building control (council or a registered building control approver).
