Each window in Accrington is measured to the real opening, including the lintel, render beads and cill, which is why the survey comes before any price is fixed.
Perforated and grille shutters let passers-by in Accrington see the window display after hours, which many councils prefer on shopping streets.
Rules that apply in Accrington
Planning in Accrington follows the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and the permitted development rules in England. Shopfront shutters usually need planning permission; for houses it depends on the property, and listed buildings need listed building consent from the council, with Historic England involved for higher-grade buildings.
Electrical work for powered shutters is carried out to BS 7671, with notifiable work in homes (under Part P) self-certified by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control.
Fire shutters in workplaces and other non-domestic premises, including the common parts of blocks of flats, are maintained under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, where the responsible person is responsible for keeping fire safety measures in working order. Fire shutters that form part of building work also need approval from building control (council or a registered building control approver).
